5 Airline Mistakes That Could Land You in Jail

Airline Jail: Airline passenger behavior frequently makes the news and can occasionally have serious problems. You could end yourself in “airline jail,” which is an airline’s internal no-fly list or customer ban list, for a variety of reasons, including being aggressive or unruly, ignoring safety warnings, being intoxicated, or damaging aircraft.  In addition to being placed on an airline’s internal no-fly list, misbehavior may result in fines or legal action from the Federal Aviation Administration. There were 2,102 reports of disruptive passengers to the FAA in 2024. This figure encompasses every instance in which the FAA looked into one or more infractions of federal laws or FAA regulations.


Here are some more examples of unacceptable behavior that could put you in “airline jail.”

1. Skipping Layover Flights Intentionally:
A flight with a layover can occasionally be far less expensive than a nonstop one. It can be tempting to skip the final leg and complete your trip at the layover airport if you live in that connecting city. It seems like a wise method to save money, doesn’t it? This strategy, sometimes referred to as hidden-city ticketing or skiplagging, is regrettably disliked by the airlines.


Technology is being used more and more by airlines to detect and punish skiplaggers. Although flying hidden-city flights is not against the law, you risk fines, having your miles taken away, or having your reward program account closed if you are caught doing so.

2. Frequent Complainer:
Do you lodge a complaint to get reimbursed for your travel-related problems when something goes wrong? When used sparingly, this is an effective method of getting problems on a journey sufficiently resolved. Even if your complaints are legitimate, you risk being classified as a “frequent complainer” and placed on an airline’s bad list if you file them too frequently or for too many trivial reasons.

3. Money Refunds:
If you have a nonrefundable airline ticket and are unable to fly due to an emergency, you might choose to dispute your credit card since the airline is not understanding. A credit card dispute can seem like a simple solution, but proceed with caution; it might land you in “airline jail.” The airline might think you still owe money and prevent you from using it going forward until you resolve your payment dispute, even if your credit card company takes your side and gives you a refund. This is the reason it’s crucial to get travel insurance: To get your money back and prevent an airline from disputing your credit card, you can submit a claim to your insurer.

4. Selling Airline Miles:
If you’re a US citizen, you might understand the airline miles and how beneficial to the customers. So, if you get airline miles extra and feel like selling or bartering, then this is not the right plan. As per the terms and conditions, this is not illegal in the US, but according to the terms and conditions, this is against your loyalty towards airlines. Airlines can put you in jail or close your membership account.

5. Exploiting Lounge Access:
Some travelers have taken advantage of the access restrictions over the years by purchasing a refundable airline ticket to enter a lounge that they would not otherwise be allowed to access, even though many passengers hold one of the premium credit cards that allow admission to airport lounges. Some of them might plan to get the ticket as that might be refundable, and cancel it immediately after entering the lounge. It is said that you can be easily noticed if you do this.
