Full 2025 Holiday Calendar:
The U.S. stock markets will be closed on Friday, July 4th in observance of Independence Day. Both the Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) will close early at 1 p.m. ET on Thursday, July 3rd, and remain closed the following day, July 4th. Additionally, the U.S. bond market will also close early at 2 p.m. ET on July 3rd and will stay closed on July 4th.
The celebration of Independence Day began in 1776 when Philadelphia commemorated the first anniversary of American independence. This event was marked by a “spontaneous celebration”, which John Adams, one of the Founding Fathers, described in a letter to his daughter, Abigail. However, it wasn’t until after the War of 1812 that Fourth of July celebrations became more regular. During that time, groundbreaking events like the opening of the Erie Canal and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad were intentionally scheduled to coincide with the holiday festivities. In 1870, Congress passed a law making Independence Day an official federal holiday.
