ITR Deadline 2025 Update: Will Govt Push Last Date? Income Tax Return (ITR) for the current assessment year 2025-26 is within a few days’ reach, and this is the only remaining time given for taxpayers to file their returns. With the deadline looming so close, the crowds flock in thousands just to file returns before incurring penalties. The big question on everyone’s mind is: Will the government push the last date beyond this week?
The past years have witnessed the government, on occasions, extending the deadlines, especially when technology failure sometimes combined with last-minute rushes or extraordinary situations kept taxpayers from submitting on time. This year, while there has been much talk among people and tax professionals about needing such extension, the Ministry of Finance has not given any official comments regarding that. Sources state that the government is closely watching filing trends before coming to a final decision.
The Importance of Extensions
Relief for taxpayers collecting still-needed documents such as Form 16, interest certificates, and investment proofs will also be extended. Chartered accountants and tax professionals have also urged the government to include additional time in consideration of overwork they have suffered in the mounting pile, in addition to last-minute portal slowdowns; however, officials have indicated that on-time filing avoids the backload and leads to speedier processing of refunds.
Penalty for Late Filing
This government has not pushed the date any further with taxes-those who cannot meet the last date will be imposed with penalties from ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 depending on their group of income. Moreover, late filing would further lead to delays in refunds and other difficulties while carrying certain losses. Experts recommend that people file their returns at the earliest to avoid the last minute rush coupled with slow portals.

Tax Payers Must Do
Waiting for an extension is not advisable for taxpayers until a formal announcement is made because early filing would benefit the accuracy aspect and allow rectification of errors. A good many portals and official apps allow quick and painless submissions through the income tax e-filing portal.
