The Indian stock market closed lower on Thursday as both Sensex and Nifty ended the session with sharp losses due to global uncertainty following the US Federal Reserve’s latest rate cut. The Sensex dropped by 593 points to 84,404, while the Nifty declined by 176 points, settling at 25,878.
The main reason behind this fall was the 25-basis-point rate cut announced by the US Federal Reserve and Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s statement indicating no assurance of another cut in December. Analysts say global market sentiment weakened after this announcement, creating cautious trading behavior in emerging markets like India.
According to Abhinav Tiwari from Bonanza, investors are keeping a close watch on the upcoming Trump-Xi meeting in South Korea, as any positive development could help stabilize global markets. Vinod Nair of Geojit Investments added that although the rate cut was expected, Powell’s remarks dampened hopes for further easing, strengthening the US dollar and triggering a risk-averse mood among investors.
Rupak De from LKP Securities stated that the bears currently dominate the market. He explained that if Nifty fails to stay above 25,900–25,950, it might fall to around 25,800. However, if it moves past 25,950, it could trigger bullish momentum.
