Washington enforce strict sanctions not limited to Russia. The sanction imposed on its largest oil entities, Rosneft and Lukoil, is designed to choke their respective revenue streams against the current backdrop of rising geopolitical tensions. Consequently, the sanctions will not permit signing of contracts with these firms into effect come November 21, 2025, as part of a wider strategy to economically pressure Russia. Reliance Confirms Following U.S. Sanctions on Russian Oil Imports.
The company Reliance Industries is the largest importer of Russian crude oil in all of India. Reliance announced that, indeed, it will comply fully with the U.S. sanctions. The company runs the Jamnagar refinery, the largest in the world, which deals with several long-term agreements with Rosneft and import crude in significant volumes.
Reliance agreed not to import oil under current contracts with Rosneft but will have compliance with imports. The company reiterated its commitment to international compliance while also ensuring smooth operations.
Reliance intends to continue sourcing crude from the spot market, as opposed to long-term agreements, to ensure that operations at the refinery don’t come to a standstill. This means that the company can secure unprocessed crude that feeds around 1.4 million barrels per day refining operations, without getting into the illegal boundaries of the sanctions legal framework.
This change might cumulatively slightly rise the overall import cost for India, but its effects would be in minimum amounts compared to domestic supply and export commitments.

As Reliance-wise decision, it generally responds to Indians’ refiners under this U.S. sanction, which some firms halt imports from these sanctioned Russian entities, while others now go into sourcing alternatives. In this manner, supply chains won’t get disrupted or engagement trade tensions.
This is emphasized as a demonstration of how global geopolitical events influence energy sourcing strategies, while also indicating the extent of Reliance’s focus on compliance indeed mixed into operational continuity.
