Tarun Garg: Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has made a historic decision by appointing Tarun Garg as its next managing director & chief executive officer (MD & CEO), marking him as the first Indian national to lead the company in its 29-year history. His appointment, effective from January 1, 2026, occurs while current Managing Director Unsoo Kim is transitioning back to a “strategic role” at Hyundai Motor Company (HMC) in South Korea.

“Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has announced the appointment of Mr. Tarun Garg as the next Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, pending shareholder approval, effective January 1, 2026. This represents a significant milestone, as Mr. Garg is the first Indian national to assume this leadership role at HMIL since the company was founded 29 years ago. Currently, Mr. Garg holds the position of Whole-time Director and COO at HMIL. The company announced on Wednesday that, after a smooth transition, Mr. Unsoo Kim, the current Managing Director, will return to a strategic role at Hyundai Motor Company (HMC) in South Korea.

Tarun Garg Current Position in Hyundai Motors:
Garg is HMIL’s full-time director and chief operating officer (COO). He has played a leading role in the company’s unprecedented growth over the last few years. Upon the announcement, José Muñoz, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, expressed his approval, stating, “Tarun’s appointment as the first Indian national to lead HMIL is a defining moment in our nearly three-decade history. With him as COO, HMIL hit unprecedented sales figures for three years running, made profits that surpassed previous records, and in 2024 finalized the largest IPO in India.

Tarun Garg Work Experience:

Before joining Hyundai in 2019, Garg had already built a long and successful career at Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL). He began as a management trainee and gradually advanced through various positions, such as Regional Sales Manager, Commercial Business Head, and Executive Director of Marketing, Logistics, Parts, and Accessories. After joining Hyundai, his career growth continued at a remarkable pace. Furthermore, his swift rise from Head of Sales, Service & Marketing to Chief Operating Officer (COO) in 2023 stood as a testament to his strong leadership and strategic vision.
