UPI Payments with ChatGPT: UPI services revolutionized digital payments in India, and now AI is taking them to the next level. OpenAI’s ChatGPT has started testing direct UPI payments in India, allowing users to complete transactions without switching to other apps. For testing this pilot version, OpenAI has partnered with NPCI and Razorpay. According to the AI experts and analysts, this is going to be a major step towards AI-powered quick-commerce. India is already adapting towards AI technology in most of the sectors, and now ChatGPT, which is the largest AI hub, has one of the highest user bases from India.

The Idea Behind UPI Integration:
OpenAI aims to create a complete AI ecosystem. It automates transactions while keeping security and user control as the top priority. The AI prompts users and finalizes payments. This initial experiment will test OpenAI’s payment platform, and when fully launched, it could transform online shopping. Users will enjoy real-time tracking, instant revocation, and full control over their transactions.

Pilot Partners & Scope:
The UPI payments feature is currently in the pilot stage. BigBasket is the first platform to participate, supported by Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank. Users can shop for groceries directly through ChatGPT. After the trial, more platforms are expected to join. The combination of Razorpay, NPCI UPI infrastructure, and OpenAI’s AI models ensures secure transactions.

How the Payment Process Works:
When you start a shopping conversation on ChatGPT, it will prompt you for products on BigBasket. Following this, you add the items in your cart while chatting, and after the shopping, ChatGPT takes you directly to the UPI payment method and completes the transaction securely without any interference or disturbing you.

For example, if you want to order vegetarian curry or Chinese food for four, ChatGPT will search the catalog, show options, and present UPI payment choices, all within the chat interface.

Security and User Control:
OpenAI prioritizes a user-controlled payment experience. The system keeps financial data private and enforces high security standards. AI agents handle transactions using payment credentials, ensuring autonomy and safety. Every step happens within a secure environment.

Availability:
The pilot is not yet open to all ChatGPT users. For the initial testing process, they have selected some private beta users, and some of the participants are going to have this access. According to the sources, OpenAI is planning to release this feature in Phases and is going to make this available to everyone.
