Why Your ITR Refund Is Delayed This Year? There is an increasing concern over unnecessary delays, with the growing number of agitated taxpayers awaiting refunds of their ITR this year. Ordinarily, ITR refunds reach the taxpayer within weeks of verification. However, this year, it is the processing cycle weighed down by some desperately needed new factors.
1. Increased Workload Due to Temporary Surge in Earlier Filings
This year has already witnessed a dramatic rise in early filing of ITRs. As if these sudden surges were not enough, the heavy filings traffic has also burdened the processing of the Income Tax Department-and delayed returns that would otherwise be error-free.
2. Stricter Deductions Checks and High Value Data
With better tracking, deductions, capital gains, foreign income, and huge transactions are under the scanner more than ever. If any discrepancy is noticed by the department between the ITR and AIS or TDS, it goes for delayed refund under manual scrutiny.
3. System Upgrade And Backend Verification
The IT portal is regularly updated for the purposes of better accuracy and fraud prevention. During these very updates, additional verifications of certain refunds, especially of those requiring very thorough cross-checking, takes much longer for final clearance.
4. E-Verification Pending
Many taxpayers tend to forget to e-verify their ITR. Hence processing begins post-verification and any verification denial will mean refund delay.
Check whether your ITR has been processed, is under review, or is pending by logging onto the e-filing portal.
2. Compare AIS with TDS Details
Ensure there are no differences between the return you filed and what has been presented in the AIS and Form 26AS.
3. Reply to Notices Without Delay
Responding to any clarification or further information requests immediately would avoid delays.
