The Girlfriend 3 Days Collections: After a slow start at the box office, choreographer-director turned film producer-turned-director-turned-writer-turned-actor: Rahul Ravindran’s latest romantic drama about love, The Girlfriend, has begun! The film journeys through elaborate emotions and the pitfalls of modern relationships, which have generated opinions galore on the internet. Despite mixed reviews for the film, Rashmika’s heavy performance complemented by a very relatable storyline has set the word-of-mouth pumping especially in the Telugu regions.
The Girlfriend opened to ₹1.3 crore collection on the first Friday of its release, having most of its share coming from the Telugu version (₹1.23 crore) with a thin distribution from the Hindi version (₹0.07 crore).
On Day 2 (Saturday), the collections almost double to ₹2.55 crore (Telugu ₹2.45 crore; Hindi ₹0.10 crore) with a 96% increase showing strength.
Sunday too saw growth with another ₹3 crore coming in, amounting to a net collection in India over the three-day period of ₹6.80 crore.
Although steady growth over the weekend had been recorded, the film needs a big push to enter into the profit zone.
According to trade sources, The Girlfriend had been made at a budget of around ₹40-50 crore, including production, promotion, and distribution costs.
To achieve breakeven, the film needs to gross ₹45-50 crore worldwide. Looking at the current pace, The Girlfriend would need to maintain decent weekday numbers and second-weekend productivity to recover its investment. Strong digital and satellite revenues might also turn out to be the crucial deciding factor in covering the deficit.
The Girlfriend could reach moderate success if good word-of-mouth spreads, especially with Rashmika’s fans supporting the film in the coming days. However, it still stands far from being fingerprinted due to the high budget.
