An Underrated Bollywood Thriller That Will Leave You Questioning Everything

An Underrated Bollywood Thriller That Will Leave You Questioning Everything

Bollywood Thriller: Once in a while, you find a movie that makes you ponder how it almost “got away” — and “404” (2011) is definitely that type of film. Directed by Prawaal Raman, this psychological thriller is not only a suspenseful story, but it also dives right into the foggy gray area of the overlap between science, belief, and our minds.

404: An Underrated Bollywood Thriller

“404” takes place at a medical college (think: “Horror movie version of Medical School”), and explores a few supernaturally strange happenings that revolve around Room 404, a hostel room that was abandoned by a student after a well-publicized tragic suicide. This is where Rajvvir Arora, is introduced as a rational and science-laden character with no previous cosmic connection to anything – who moves back into Room 404, and encounters some odd visions. What follows is a film of psychological unravelling threatening the cyclical nature of reality, perception, and mental health to keep you guessing in case it all in his mind, otherwise…yikes, something is really supernatural is going on here.

The film is very well produced, and its performances add to the enjoyment value. Imad Shah is beguiling in his role, and Tisca Chopra lends depth and weight to a supporting character. However, it is the late Nishikant Kamat who is a standout performer, as Professor Anirudh, who has his skepticism challenged as he gets embroiled in unraveling the mystery. And, Kamat’s character adds great moral ambiguity.

It’s a shame that 404 received little attention after its release, despite it having some solid content. Maybe it got lost in distribution, eclipsed by bigger-budget productions or a marketing push, or it simply wasn’t the right film at the right time. In today’s world of endless streaming options and rediscovering films, it seems like a good time to look back and celebrate those overlooked films.

So, have you watched 404? What did you think about its psychological depth and creepy tension? Where do you think it falls in the rankings of Bollywood thrillers? Are there other films you feel are equally deserving or more worthy?

Let’s share our thoughts and hopefully give 404 the credit it deserves.
