BTS’ smash hit “Dynamite” has officially hit 2 billion views on YouTube, becoming one of the most-watched K-pop videos ever. It took the music video around 5 years and 13 days to reach this major milestone. The song was released on August 21, 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when people around the world were stuck at home.
When Dynamite dropped, it shattered multiple records. It had the most views for a YouTube premiere and became the fastest music video to hit 100 million views at the time. The song also marked a historic moment for BTS it gave them their first-ever No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making them the first all-South Korean act to do so.
In a past interview, Jin revealed that BTS wasn’t excited about Dynamite at first. The group had just canceled their world tour due to the pandemic, and their agency offered them three English demo tracks. Dynamite was the first one they heard. “We asked for alternatives,” Jin said, “but we liked the other two even less.” Though it wasn’t their favorite, they went with it and the rest is history.
Dynamite was BTS’ first full English song, which played a key role in expanding their global fanbase. Its success paved the way for more English-language hits like “Butter” and “Permission to Dance.”
