Coolie and War 2 are two much-awaited films with a large cast of stars and enormous budgets. Rajinikanth’s Coolie has performed well so far, while War 2 is up against some significant challenges at the box office.
Coolie has grossed ₹400 crore worldwide thus far, and it is the first Tamil film to set a record. The producers still have a way before they break even, as they are estimating ₹700 crore before they break even. The USA market has performed well hitting $6.3 million and experts predict they will reach $8 million soon. So producers will be making money overseas.
Overseas movie box office results are mixed depending upon regional differences. Malaysia and Singapore have strong collections. In Australia and Europe & the UK – the collections are pathetic. So, The overseas earnings will definitely will not cover costs for the movie.
In India, the Telugu version perform well. The distributors are happy with its performance, because it did well. It had poor collections in Tamil Nadu – trailing Vijay’s Leo which was poor for both films. Kerala collections are weak, and Karnataka expect to recover its investments.
War 2, with NTR and Hrithik Roshan, with a ₹400 crore budget have a lot riding on the movie to recoup its costs. The movie only managed ₹9 crore collections on its first Monday. This news caused concern for fans, and for industry analysts. Adipurush, which the industry criticized as a flop, did earn ₹16 crore on its Monday. War 2 took a big hit over the course of its work week when it had the momentum going for it.
It’s become perilous to accurately gauge its box office numbers in the near-term future, with its results approaching 6 days of estimates. Its tail-end trajectory for the long-term future looks to be dim.
Fans ponder the question of whether War 2 can recover. Due to the massive budget, it will be tough to break even. The global box office is far below expectations so the film needs a miracle.
Coolie has a strong Telugu market. It exceeds its expectation in AP. Tamil Nadu collections are not great. Locally, the film is behind Vijay’s Leo. Little interest in Kerala. Kotlin would still be steady, but there is little hope in that market. The overseas situation has USA booming with good collections. The rest is uneven.
Is Break-Even Possible?
Coolie needs tons of growth to reach ₹700 crore mark for break even. Coolie’s collection on Monday comes in at ₹12 crore, which shows that there is stable domestic interest in the film. It is Rajinikanth and other big stars like Shruti Haasan, Nagarjuna and Aamir Khan’s presence that is working as the biggest driver for tickets sales. The film has the potential to become a massive global hit.
War 2’s uphill battle
War 2’s weak domestic collection on Monday cannot come as a shock to fans. The ₹9 crore collection shows that there will be real issues facing the film going forward. Adipurush even outperformed with the bad press! That was a good start to the opening weekend, but what a serious decline right afterwards. Trade analysts are saying that it will struggle to recover. It is a substantial ₹400 crore budget to deal with. War 2 still has market in both domestic and overseas limitations.
Coolie and War 2 are in stark contrast. Coolie will have strong Telugu and USA markets. War 2 flails after an exceptional start. Coolie’s gross amount of ₹400 crore shows promise. War 2 is lackluster level internationally. Coolie’s break-even seems possible. War 2 is almost impossible. Rajinikanth’s film takes the edge. NTR’s project may need some more momentum.
