Actor Dhanush is once again facing backlash for not crediting actress Nithya Menen, this time during a post marking the third anniversary of Thiruchitrambalam. While some see this as a simple oversight or the work of a social media manager, others argue it points to a deeper, ongoing issue. But as with many online controversies, the truth may lie somewhere in between.
Many critics argue that Dhanush’s repeated failure to mention Nithya especially in posts about films where she played a central role, could reflect personal bias or even misogyny. However, this interpretation may be overlooking key context and developments from the past year.
Two major cases complicate the picture. The first involves a video released by Valai Pechu (VP) late last year. VP, typically pro-Dhanush, publicly criticized Nithya Menen, referencing rumours that she was unhappy about wasted dates on a film set (likely Thalaivi) and suggesting she had become difficult to work with. Their tone implied a professional rift between Nithya and the film’s team possibly including Dhanush.
The second case involves Nithya’s own comments earlier this year, where she openly spoke about the lack of credit for actresses and about actors with “fake attitudes.” Just days later, the first-look poster for Idly Kadai was released, without her name.
Adding to the speculation is a noticeable shift in social media behaviour. Both Dhanush and Nithya, who previously engaged with each other’s posts, have not done so for the past 7–8 months. Nithya didn’t share the Idly Kadai poster or its first single, something she usually does for her projects and has not liked any related posts.
Defenders of Dhanush have pointed to past instances where he credited her, or suggested poetic reasons for the recent anniversary post. However, these explanations don’t fully address the broader trend of her absence from recent promotions.
While nothing is confirmed, the “rift hypothesis” the idea that a personal or professional fallout has occurred, seems to explain more of the available evidence than the idea that there’s no issue at all. Until new information surfaces, this theory remains the most plausible lens through which to view the controversy.
