Dharmendra Political Career:
Dharmendra, popularly known as the “He-Man” of Bollywood, ruled the silver screen for decades with his powerful roles and charming personality. He defeated many villains in films and won millions of hearts across the country. However, when it came to politics, Dharmendra could not recreate the same magic. Though he entered politics with great popularity, his political career remained short and full of controversies.
Dharmendra made his political debut in 2004 when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) gave him a ticket from Bikaner, Rajasthan. At that time, the Congress party had already won the seat twice. Still, Dharmendra’s star power, along with strong campaigning by senior BJP leaders like L.K. Advani, helped him win the election. He entered the Lok Sabha with a huge margin of nearly 60,000 votes. Initially, everything looked positive, and fans were excited to see their favourite actor as a Member of Parliament.
But problems started soon after. Even after becoming an MP, Dharmendra could not stay away from films. He continued acting and remained busy with shootings during important parliamentary sessions. Because of this, his attendance in Parliament dropped very low. Opposition leaders criticised him, and even people from his own constituency complained that their MP was rarely seen. Many accused him of not taking his political responsibility seriously. However, some supporters claimed that he did work quietly for the development of the region.
After completing his five-year term, Dharmendra decided to step away from politics. He clearly stated that he would never return to political life. Later, his son Sunny Deol also spoke about this and said that his father never enjoyed politics and regretted entering it.
Interestingly, Sunny Deol followed his father’s path by joining the BJP and becoming the MP from Gurdaspur. But just like Dharmendra, Sunny also faced criticism for poor attendance in Parliament, which once went down to only 18 percent. Eventually, he too stepped away from active politics after one term.
In contrast, Dharmendra’s wife Hema Malini proved to be more successful in politics. She won multiple times as the Member of Parliament from Mathura and continues to be an active and respected political figure.
