Pariyerum Perumal, written and directed by Mari Selvaraj, starred Kathir and Anandhi in the lead roles. It follows the journey of Pariyan, a Dalit youth who enrolls in college with hopes of a better life. However, he faces constant harassment from upper-caste classmates.

He falls in love with Jothi Mahalakshmi, an upper caste girl, but their love faces complications due to caste-based discrimination and violence. The film explores themes of love, justice, and the fight against societal issues.

Pariyerum Perumal became a commercial hit, grossing ₹1,08,70,456 at the box office. It received a positive response in Chennai and became one of the most influential films in Tamil cinema.

Reports suggest that Dhadak 2 retains the core themes of the original, adapting them to a new cultural context. The story revolves around two college students from contrasting backgrounds: one from a reserved category, and the other from a privileged city family. Siddhant Chaturvedi portrays a young man who faces caste-based discrimination after securing admission through a reservation quota. Triptii Dimri plays a modern, city-bred girl who challenges social norms and believes in equality.
