Nak*d scenes: In the film industry of India, where cultural boundaries and censorship loom large, the shooting of scenes indicating nudity or intimacy demands immaculate planning and care. Contrary to popular belief, however, most of those seen in the open are far less daring than what would appear in real in such situations. They are put together using camera tricks, perfect editing, and professionalism maintained by all parties.
In most cases, Indian films avoid showcasing nudity in its original form. Rather, close-ups and frontal nudity, and the rest, are created in illusion with the help of light, shadow, and framing. Costumes in the flesh or costume color, bedsheets, or tactically placed objects are used for covering up. In most cases, the directors do several takes from different angles to get it right in terms of expression and yet keep the actor comfortable.
Professional body doubles always come to the rescue when a situation requires a daring portrayal. Some actors also employ “intimacy doubles,” so named for their very specific and trained handling of such scenes, where safety features and respect for the highest degree are a must. Nowadays, visual enhancement can be done to a fair degree by computer-generated imagery (CGI) and computer applications, so that the wrong picture will either look right or be obliterated by other images that conform to the dictates of censorship in the given country.
Only really necessary crew members enter the set. In the last few years, Indian productions have started hiring intimacy coordinators- who are professionals choreographers of such sensitive scenes to ensure consent and emotional safety. Actors are run through a clear brief, and the atmosphere is kept closed and controlled at all times during filming.
India’s Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) lays out a rigid set of guidelines for anything remotely close to nudity. Hence, filmmakers prefer to imply instead of expose. What the audience finally sees is, after all, not raw reality but an account of the terrific direction, artistic framing, and utmost respect for the dignity of the performer.
