Indian Cinema’s Next Superhero? Weekend Blockbusters To Collaborate with Sandeep

With the enormous popularity of Lokah Chapter 1 Chandra and the previous hit Minnal Murali, Indian cinema appears to have found its next fix- superheroes. Filmmakers from all industries are ready to create larger-than-life heroes and movie worlds with a hope of recreating the worldwide phenomenon created by Marvel and DC. Malayalam cinema, in specific, made waves with Minnal Murali and Lokah Chapter 1 Chandra that created a new benchmark and made audiences eagerly waiting for more from that world.

Rumors of a New Hero after Lokah Chapter 1 Chandra

Now, word is going around that Weekend Blockbusters, the production house which made Minnal Murali, is set to cross-pollinate its so-called “Weekend Cinematic Universe” (WCU) further. Rumor has it that Sandeep Pradeep, who rose to fame with Padakkalam, will wear the cape as the studio’s latest superhero. Word has it that the project will take a dramatic superhero turn, joining earlier WCU releases like Detective Ujjwalan and Minnal Murali.

The Uncertain State of the WCU

Although the concept appears to be ambitious, a lot of critics and fans doubt if indeed the WCU has a well-laid out itinerary. At present, the current lineup is comprised of Minnal Murali (whose sequel is unsure), the box office disaster Detective Ujjwalan, and an upcoming zombie thriller Jambi. The variable quality of the films and looseness of narrative links between them are matters of concern: is this really a common universe, or are producers merely slapping the WCU tag on in order to profit from the success of Minnal Murali?

Dangers of Overcrowding the Genre

The bigger worry is whether Indian cinema is jumping into the superhero bandwagon too hastily. As has been the case with the fall of big-budget period spectacles like Mamangam and Marakkar, pouring the market with half-cooked ideas will kill a genre before it can grow. Superhero movies need big budgets, great writing, and premium execution; one or two flops might get the studios hesitant, preventing progress in the first place.

If Weekend Blockbusters succeed in weaving a cohesive story and shunning gimmicks, Sandeep’s reported superhero film can usher in a fascinating chapter. Without a strong long-term vision, however, the WCU can end up as just another marketing slogan. The coming releases will tell if this is indeed the break of dawn for India’s very own superhero universe- or a fleeting fad.
