68th Grammy Awards: India’s musical influence on the world stage has recently increased. Several Indian and Indian-origin musicians have gained attention after the Recording Academy announced nominations for the 68th Annual Grammy Awards. Leading the way is composer and sitarist Anoushka Shankar, who received several nominations for her most recent composition, Chapter III: We Return to Light.
The project, which was collaborated on by percussionist Sarathy Korwar and sarod master Alam Khan, was nominated for Best Global Music Album. The EP combines contemporary soundscapes with deeply ingrained Indian classical textures, a skill Shankar has developed over her two-decade career.
Indian Artists in the 68th Grammy Awards:
This year, there are three Indian partnerships in the Best Global Music Album competition. Composer Siddhant Bhatia’s Sounds of Kumbha, a collaborative album inspired by the spiritual and aural energy of the Kumbh Mela, is released alongside Shankar’s record. Shakti’s Mind Explosion (50th Anniversary Tour Live), which honors the renowned jazz-fusion group’s five-decade journey under the direction of John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain, is also nominated.

For Best Global Music Performance, Shankar and Shakti each received a second nomination. That category is being contested by their respective songs, Daybreak (Shankar, Khan, Korwar) and Shrini’s Dream (Live) (Shakti). The acknowledgement demonstrates how Indian music, in all of its forms, classical, folk, and experimental, continues to push artistic frontiers much beyond its own country.
