Top 5 must watch Korean Movies: Old boy, Parasite,……

Korean movies: South Korea is a small country, but the amount of films it produces is huge in numbers, that country is especially famous for K-dramas, many Gen-z kids are addicted to these Korean dramas. Throughout India if we go to any corporate company and ask any individual what is their favourite K-drama, the list will go on and on. 


This list below is for those audiences who are interested in exploring more Korean cinema. Here it goes…

NO 1: OLDBOY(2003)


Steer clear of this film if you have a weak mind, because I promise you this will disturb your mind very deeply. The climatic twist in the end is so dark, you may experience a feeling of emptiness in your heart. 

On the surface Old boy is a revenge drama, a man is kidnapped and kept in a cage for several years, after his release he hunts down his captors. This simple line goes deep into human psychology and vulnerabilities of our relationships, it will definitely leave a lasting impression on you. 

Park Chan-wook is the director of this film, if you like this film then check out his other interesting titles such as Lady Vengeance, Sympathy for Mr.vengeance and The Handmaiden.

NO 2: MEMORIES OF MURDER(2003)

This is a serial killer film, well more of a police procedural film. Two opposing ideological detectives must work together to catch a serial killer in a rural Korean town. The film shows the problems in the justice system with a dark humor layered on top of it. 

This Bong Joon-ho directorial will teach you a lot about Korean police structure and its workings, the film contains a lot of chilling and thrilling sequences in rain. A must watch for serial killer film fans.

NO 3: THE HOST(2006)

This is another Korean film directed by Bong Joon-ho, this film is a monster action film. A satirical family drama about the effects of harmful bio waste dump in water bodies. This film too has amazing action sequences involving monster and the havoc it creates on the city.

The film follows a dysfunctional Korean family, a monster abducts a girl in their family, the film follows their struggle in finding that beloved and sweet school girl. This adventurous journey has a lot of action scenes and awe moments. 

NO 4: SECRET SUNSHINE(2007)

Lee Chang-Dong is a filmmaker famous for making slow burning dramas, in fact his filmography contains a film called “Burning”. But, this film follows a widow and her life situations, she to grieve the husband’s death visits his home town and lands in an unexpected trouble. 

Korean films have a lot of cultural similarities when compared to Indian films, they too focus more on family emotions and the drama behind those relationships. 

NO 5: PARASITE (2019)

Most of the cinephiles know about this film, because the film created a sensation in Academy Awards 2020, it won 4 oscars and put Korean cinema on the world map. Parasite is a comedy, thriller film. It follows a poor family trying to infiltrate a rich family. But, the twist arrives when they discover another poor individual in that same rich house. 

The film is layered with class difference themes and the characters are organically developed through their living conditions. This makes the film a fun and exciting ride.
