Malayalam Actor: When people discuss the power of Malayalam cinema at the box office, the first names that come to mind would almost always be Mohanlal, Mammootty, or the latest crop of youngsters. But few may realize that Lal has quietly made for himself a singular achievement – the rare accomplishment of working in more than five films that crossed the ₹100 crore mark at the box office.
Lal, who made his mark in cinema as a director before becoming one of the significant character artists in Malayalam films, has been able to strike gold by being part of some significant blockbusters in Indian cinema. His ability to traverse industries and genres has resulted in his continued demand as an artist even outside of the confines of Malayalam cinema.
Among his box office triumphs is the game-changing Pulimurugan (2016) with Mohanlal, which became the first Malayalam film to cross the ₹100 crore mark worldwide. Lal’s significant role, as an important part of the cast who added to the depth of the mass entertainer, took the film to new heights. And now the film is cemented in our history.
He then ventured into other industries, securing significant roles in large projects. Lal appeared in the Telugu-Hindi bilingual action film Saaho (2019) alongside Prabhas, which grossed over ₹100 crore despite mixed reviews. Additionally, Lal contributed to Mani Ratnam’s epic drama Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1 and Part 2, both of which were major pan-Indian hits with gross revenues exceeding 100 crores.
Stamping this onto the impressive list, Lal starred in Veera Simha Reddy (2023), featuring Nandamuri Balakrishna, which became a commercial success in Telugu cinema and added to Lal’s tally of 100 crore films.
What is remarkable about these films is that Lal is not the movie star in these roles. His range as an actor and ability to transition into roles as a supporting role or character actor capable of being part of multiple story worlds gave him the opportunity to consistently be involved with some of Indian cinema’s grandest films.
From someone who started behind the camera and made the transition to performing, Lal is inspiring to a film viewer. This exciting record means that sometimes, a blockbuster’s legacy can be taken from not just the main role, but a great character performance.
