Narivetta Is Based on a Shocking True Story – Here’s Why It Belongs on Your Watchlist

Inspired by the Muthanga Incident

Tovino Thomas’ Narivetta recently premiered on SonyLIV, but the story goes beyond fiction. The film is inspired by the 2003 Muthanga incident, a tribal land rights protest in Kerala’s Wayanad district. On February 19 that year, tribals occupied forest land to demand the land they were promised by the government in 2001. When the government failed to deliver, Adivasi Gothra Maha Sabha led by C.K. Janu and M. Geethanandan took the protest deep into the Muthanga forest.

The police crackdown turned violent. Tribals fought back with sticks and stones. In the chaos, constable K.V. Vinod and tribal youth Jogi lost their lives. Tear gas, gunfire, and arson followed. The state claimed two deaths, but protestors alleged more.

Fictional Retelling, Rooted in Reality

While Narivetta takes creative liberties, it stays close to the heart of the real incident. Tovino plays Varghese, a reluctant constable who uncovers a deadly cover-up. His colleague, Basheer (played by Suraj Venjaramoodu), is found murdered. Initially blamed on the tribals, the killing is eventually revealed to be an inside job. As Varghese investigates, he exposes that five tribals were killed in a planned operation.

Though Narivetta is not a documentary, it mirrors the core injustice of the Muthanga protest – broken promises, violent suppression, and buried truths.

What Makes Narivetta a Must-Watch

The film delivers a gripping thriller rooted in human conflict and moral ambiguity. Tovino Thomas is compelling as the conflicted cop-turned-whistleblower, bringing quiet intensity and emotional depth. Suraj Venjaramoodu delivers a grounded performance, while Cheran’s menacing screen presence leaves a mark. Director Anuraj Manohar builds tension without losing authenticity, crafting atmospheric forest sequences that feel claustrophobic and real. The film’s visuals by cinematographer Vijay capture the haunting beauty of Wayanad, while Jakes Bejoy’s moody background score tightens the suspense. Narivetta blends mystery, emotion, and strong character arcs, making it a standout genre piece worth your time.
