Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor: The Original Choices for Devdas?

Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor: The Original Choices for Devdas?

A Missed Opportunity and Fallout

In the early 2000s, Sanjay Leela Bhansali had Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor in mind for key roles in Devdas. Saif was approached for Chunilal, while Kareena was screen-tested for Paro. However, things didn’t go as planned, and both actors were eventually replaced, leading to a fallout with Bhansali.

Saif’s Explanation

In a 2001 interview, Saif made it clear that he did not turn down the role of Chunilal. He explained that the misunderstanding stemmed from a fee dispute. “Sanjay closed the chapter without discussing the price with me,” Saif said. “I didn’t even know negotiations were off until I called to ask what happened.” Despite the situation, Saif admitted he didn’t feel he was suited for the role. He said, “I didn’t think I was right for Chunilal. Even in Bimal Roy’s Devdas, Motilal didn’t seem right for the role, but at least his name matched.”

Kareena’s Hurt Feelings

Kareena Kapoor also faced disappointment with Bhansali. After a screen test for Devdas and receiving a signing amount, she was replaced by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Kareena expressed her pain in an interview, stating, “It hurt especially because I was just starting my career. He dropped me, and I signed Yaadein soon after. Sanjay hurt me. Even if I have no work, I’ll never work with him.”

Bhansali’s Side of the Story

Sanjay Leela Bhansali defended his decision, saying, “Kareena came to my house with Neeta Lulla and said she wanted to work with me. I hadn’t seen her work, so I needed to see her potential first. We arranged a photo shoot, but I made it clear it didn’t guarantee she would be cast as Paro.” He continued, “After reviewing the photos, I felt Aishwarya was the right choice for the role with her aristocratic looks. Kareena didn’t react then, but later lashed out in print.”

A 23-Year-Old Fallout

It has been 23 years since Devdas, but the fallout between Bhansali, Saif, and Kareena still stands, with neither actor ever working with the director again.
