Earlier this month, in an episode of the well-known podcast Cyrus Says, director Sanjay Gupta spoke candidly about the increasing culture of unreasonable demands in Bollywood; and he didn’t mince words. Without divulging names, Gupta revealed a story of a stringent Bollywood couple whose outrageous demands left a whole production unit speechless.
The duo in question, as per Gupta, had allegedly asked for 11 vanity vans and 2 kitchen vans with complete equipment for a film directed by Prashanth Varma. Though he did not name them directly, it later turned out that the actors involved were Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone. The duo apparently arrived on the first day alone with six individual vanity vans and produced an ₹18 lakh invoice to the producers; on day one.
The producers, naturally taken aback, delayed the promo shoot by three days. Ranveer apparently flew back instantly, and soon after that, the project was dropped altogether because of his unprofessional attitude and outrageous demands.
Sanjay Gupta compared this behavior to established stars such as Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgn, and Hrithik Roshan, who he asserts have a much more down-to-earth mindset. “Mr. Bachchan brings one makeup artist and a spot boy with him,” Gupta said. “He never makes producers pay for his crew — he pays for all of them himself. That’s why people enjoy working with him. He understands how costly filmmaking is.
Gupta criticized the ballooning entourages and how they’re putting strain on film budgets. “This isn’t a non-issue. When producers are handed bills running into lakhs, they bleed. And then the ones who suffer are those lower in the hierarchy, their fees get cut,” he explained.
In a financially troubled industry, this sort of excess is increasingly problematic. Although some stars still have a sense of money and collaboration, others appear to be losing their bearings; and it’s not just money that it’s costing.
