India’s Most Profitable Movie: Lists of this year’s box office successes and failures surfaced as the first half of 2025 came to a close. The box office was dominated by Chhaava and L2: Empuraan, although lesser films like Thudarum and Sitaare Zameen Par also received some positive reviews. However, even though movies were smashing records at the box office, one small, unstarred movie outperformed them all, at least financially.
India’s Most Profitable Movie in 2025:
The most successful Indian film of the year thus far is Tourist Family, a Tamil sleeper blockbuster. Despite only having a ₹7 crore budget, the Abishan Jeevinth-directed movie made nearly ₹90 crore globally, yielding an incredible 1200% profit margin. The main actors in the slice-of-life comedy drama Tourist Family are Kamalesh Jagan, Mithun Jai Sankar, Simran, and M. Sasikumar.
The film was well-received by critics and fans alike when it was released on April 29. Strong word-of-mouth caused the movie to do better in its second week, adding ₹29 crore to its first week’s earnings of ₹23 crore. The movie eventually made ₹90 crore globally, including ₹62 crore in India, at the end of its five-week run.

How did the Tourist Family Knock Bollywood?
With a global box office total of ₹808 crore, Chhaava is the highest-grossing Indian film of the year. However, because of its ₹90-crore budget, its profit margin is “just” 800%. Although it is a remarkable number, it is less than what the Tourist Family was able to achieve. Like Salman Khan’s Sikandar, Housefull 5’s exorbitant budget has prevented it from making a profit, even if it has made ₹300 crore worldwide. Sitaare Zameen Par, directed by Aamir Khan, has made 300% profit thus far, with a gross of 260 crore on a budget of 65 crore.
However, other Tamil and Malayalam films have achieved remarkable profit margins. The Malayalam smash Thudarum made 720% at the box office, while the Tamil film Dragon also made 300%. The year’s highest-grossing Telugu movie, Sankranthiki Vasthunam, has also made over 300% more money than its ₹60-crore budget.
