Tribanadhari Barbarik Review: Hit or Miss for Thriller Fans?

Tribanadhari Barbarik Review: Tribanadhari Barbarik, which Maruthi of Rajasaab fame has produced, is supposed to blend the mythological stories with contemporary storytelling. Whether a veteran like Sathyaraj in the lead and Udayabhanu in an important supporting role could make it both emotionally heartfelt and have a socially relevant message in it is what the concern is. But will it keep the audience hooked?

Story

Psychologist Shyam Kathu [Sathyaraj] assumes the double responsibility of looking after his granddaughter Nidhi [Meghna] after losing her parents. Nidhi, however, disappears suddenly and, as per this tragic turn of events, the grandfather embarks on searching for his granddaughter along with a policeman [Sathyam Rajesh]. Their paths cross with that of Ram [Vashishtha N Simha] and Dev [Kranthi Kiran], two friends whose greed for the moneymaking leads them to criminal behavior. The roles of Padma [Udayabhanu] and Dasanna [Motta Rajendran] are slowly peeled off with the backdrop of the story connecting with the mythological character Barbarik and his famed three arrows.

Analysis

Kudos to director Mohan for venturing into such an experimental theme in weaving mythology into modern thrillers in an attempt to endow depth and moral message to the film. The bond between grandfather and granddaughter is, of course, emotional, and the relieving final twist forms the climax of a disjointed affair. The screenplay, however, suffers from unnecessary confusion, dragging pacing as well as an absence of gripping tension, which are key ingredients in thrillers. Occasionally, it tests the patience of the audience, with a runtime of just over two hours.

Performances & Technicals

Sathyaraj carries the film with dignity, and his natural acting style suits him perfectly. Udayabhanu does lend credence to the role, but her part was kept too limited. Vashishtha Simha has an impressive act, but he is yet to get out of the shadow of villainy. Music and background score could be termed just okay, while the production seems to be leaning more towards casting over technical finesse.

Final Verdict

Tribanadhari Barbarik is a sincere attempt laden with an emotionally strong base and an apt message; however, its screenplay and narration detract from its overall impact. With better writing, this could have become an unforgettable thriller.
