What Links Avatar 3 and Game of Thrones? Theories Explored

Avatar 3 and Game of Thrones: Oona Chaplin exploded onto the screen as Varang, the antagonist in James Cameron’s newly released trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash, and immediately sent the internet into a frenzy. The actress, best known for playing Talisa Stark, “Queen in the North”, in Game of Thrones, now unleashes her dark side to lead a fierce Na’vi rebellion in a twist that fans didn’t expect.

Viewers of the Avatar series locked their attention on Varang and expressed eagerness to learn more about the Ash People after watching the trailer’s opening scenes. Fans declared this moment as Chaplin’s “villain era” after she boldly challenged the planet’s goddess Eywa with the chilling line: “Your goddess has no dominion here.”

Social media erupted with praise. One user wrote, “VARANG IS EVERYTHING.” Another commented, “First Talisa Stark in GOT, and now Varang in Avatar: Fire and Ash.” Game of Thrones fans recalled Chaplin’s heartbreaking exit in the infamous Red Wedding scene, where enemies brutally stabbed Talisa Stark and her unborn child. One more fan declared, “Oona Chaplin, the woman that u are—I need to know everything about Varang!”

Avatar’s New Threat:

Even more intriguing to observers were Varang’s gold earrings, which marked a glaring transgression of the deeply ingrained Na’vi culture. In fact, one person commented, “She truly despises Eywa.” Meanwhile, director James Cameron was blown away by Chaplin’s portrayal of Varang, who, in addition to winning over fans, possessed the ability to wield fire.

Furthermore, Chaplin’s Varang will engage in combat with Quaritch (Stephen Lang), the returning adversary, and appears to be at war with the main characters Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), and their tribes. Additionally, David Thewlis, Kate Winslet, and Sigourney Weaver are also part of the returning ensemble cast. Looking ahead, the third installment of the box office-breaking saga, Avatar: Fire and Ash, is scheduled to open in theaters on December 19, 2025.
