Amazon Introduces ₹5 Marketplace Fee: Recently, Amazon India introduced a ₹5 marketplace fee on all orders, even for Prime members. This is part of Amazon’s effort to be in-line with other e-commerce websites that have introduced fixed order fees in order to cover their cost of doing business. Even though a charge of ₹5 is relatively low, it has opened up a debate among consumers.
According to Amazon, the ₹5 fee will help maintain the speed of the platform while it is still able to offer millions of products from different sellers. Amazon joins competition like Flipkart, Zomato, Swiggy and Zepto who have introduced a marketplace fee.
All customers on Amazon, including Prime customers, will have to pay this fee.
The fee is per order regardless of how many items you purchase.
The fee will be listed as a separate item in the checkout, so you will know what you are paying for.
Some purchases are exempt from this new fee:
Gift cards (physical and digital).
Orders from Amazon Business, Bazaar, Amazon Now, and Amazon Fresh.
Digital services (mobile recharges, bill payments, subscriptions)
Amazon has outlined its refund policy for fees:
– If an order is cancelled in full, before shipping, the fee will be refunded.
– If part of an order is cancelled before shipping, a portion of the fee will be refunded.
– And If an item is returned after it has been delivered, the fee will NOT be refunded.

Despite perceptions of frivolousness, Amazon’s implementation of a marketplace fee is part of a broader trend of online retailers adopting fixed-order fees to compensate for the costs of undertaking business. Despite the fact that the charge is minor, many Prime members still protested a fee, given their subscription benefits. As e-commerce continues to evolve, fee structures may be the new normal across platforms.
