Elon Musk Starlink has received a major approval from the Indian government to offer satellite communication services. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has granted Starlink a licence, making it the third company to receive such permission after OneWeb (Eutelsat) and Reliance Jio. This is a big step for Starlink, which has been waiting since 2022 to begin its operations in India.

This licence brings Starlink closer to launching its commercial internet services in the country. Starlink plans to provide internet access to around 900 million users in India, focusing on remote and rural areas where regular broadband services remain scarce. As per reports, Starlink will get trial spectrum within 15 to 20 days of applying for it.

The company already took an important step on May 7, 2025, when it received a Letter of Intent from the DoT. Now, with the final licence in place, Starlink is expected to begin its services soon.

Starlink is also in talks with major Indian telecom companies like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. These partnerships will help in rolling out services faster across the country. The Indian government has also shown interest in satellite internet, especially for disaster-prone and remote areas where traditional networks often fail.

There is also good news regarding pricing. Starlink is planning to offer affordable internet plans starting as low as ₹850 per month. These plans may include unlimited data, which would make Starlink one of the most cost-effective satellite internet providers in the world.

By offering fast and low-cost internet, Starlink hopes to attract at least 10 million users in India in the coming years. With government support, strong partnerships, and a growing demand for better internet access in rural areas, Starlink’s entry into India could change the digital landscape significantly.
