Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation is embracing digital empowerment as EPFO adds face authentication for UAN generation with a big boost. Its EPFO 2.0 plan in the works, the organization has introduced face verification for the generation and activation of Universal Account Number (UAN). This will simplify the process for crores of subscribers and bring an end to the age-old issue of the wrong personal details.
Earlier, UANs were created by the employer primarily while providing employee information to EPFO. The process followed led to inconsistencies such as name, mobile number, or other identification-related discrepancies. Further, the conventional activation process included a standalone OTP authentication and even sometimes employer intervention, making it cumbersome for access to benefits. With face authentication, EPFO is seeking to introduce a contactless, secure, and user-friendly experience. With Aadhaar technology through the government’s UMANG app, employees and employers can now issue and activate UANs independently.
How the Face Authentication Process Works
It’s easy. The applicants need to download the UMANG app and access the UAN Allotment and Activation page. They will have to enter the Aadhaar number and registered mobile number with Aadhaar. Once the consent is received, an OTP is sent to the user to be validated. The final step is to take a live photo using the camera of the device. This photo is then compared with the data available in the Aadhaar database. On successful comparison, the UAN is generated instantly and auto-activated, and the electronic UAN card can be downloaded instantly.

This new feature very much benefits EPFO subscribers as it reduces error and eradicates delay that accompanies manual data rectification. The system also increases security through the use of biometric authentication—better than demographic or OTP authentication. Beyond that, EPFO envisages days when digital services travel even larger distances, such as enabling pensioners’ life certificates through digital life certificates made available by Jeevan Pramaan so that social security processes are no longer immovable.
With this step, EPFO not just streamlines its process but also reiterates its commitment towards having an entirely digital ecosystem, providing simple and secure services to crores of members. Incorporation of face authentication is a positive step towards increasing accuracy, simplicity in use, and overall satisfaction of members in accessing EPFO-related facilities.
