India and France Ink Rs 64,000 Crore Rafale Aircraft Agreement

In a landmark feat, India and France signed an intergovernmental agreement for the acquisition of 26 naval variants of the Rafale fighter jets for the Indian Navy. The Rs 64,000 crore-plus contract was inked virtually on Monday, a good step in strengthening India’s military might.

The agreement is between the two countries and marks a major leap towards modernization of Indian defense forces. Rafale combat aircraft would serve as force multipliers for the Indian Navy and enhance the latter’s capability to secure maritime interests, as also pre-empt proactively new rising threats. It also speaks to France’s increasing strategic regard for India, especially in defense collaboration.

India and France: Deployment on INS Vikrant

The French defense giant Dassault Aviation’s Rafale combat aircraft will be deployed on the Indian aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. It will apparently increase the Indian Navy’s operational might by arming it with sophisticated maritime war fighting capability. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh witnessed the signing ceremony, which underscored the significance of the deal.

Approval and Timeline

The purchase was approved by the Chief of the Cabinet Committee on Security, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, three weeks before it was signed. The Defence Ministry had already cleared the purchase back in July 2023 after prolonged arguments and tests for evaluation. The jets will be delivered five years from the date of signing the agreement, based on the terms of reference.

Features and Ancillary Equipment

The Indian Navy under the deal would not only take delivery of Rafale (Marine) fighters but also associated ancillary weapons that come along with it, such as weapons systems and spare parts. The Rafale variants for naval aircraft are tailored specifically for carrier usage. With the latest technology and proven combat capability in naval operating situations.
