As calls for a boycott of Turkey and Azerbaijan grow, Indian tourists are calling off their trips in record quantities. India’s biggest online travel company MakeMyTrip sees 250% rise in cancellations to these two countries, a reflection of the stunning change in traveling patterns.
The boycott is due to Turkey and Azerbaijan’s backing of Pakistan after Operation Sindoor, the Indian army operation against cross-border terrorism. Indian travelers have been very nationalistic, and thus, there has been a 60% decline in new bookings and a huge increase in cancellations.
MakeMyTrip, in a statement, mentioned that it has canceled all Turkey and Azerbaijan deals and offers and requested people to not travel there unnecessarily. The site once more showed support to India’s war forces, with the sentiment going up among Indian travelers minute by minute.
EaseMyTrip and ixigo also released advisories against visiting Turkey and Azerbaijan.
Impact on Turkey and Azerbaijan Tourism
The boycott will significantly affect tourism earnings in the two countries.
Turkey will lose $291.6 million from Indians.
Azerbaijan will lose $308.6 million.
The two countries have been experiencing a flow of Indians in the past but the current political tensions have stimulated a sharp decline in traveling spirit.
Turkey and Azerbaijan Boycott has redefined Indian travel patterns once again, with MakeMyTrip experiencing an unexpected spike in cancellations. While diplomatic relations continue to remain tense, Indian tourists have moved more towards destinations that are more accommodating of their requirements.
