Mani Ratnam’s Dream Cast for ‘Alai Payuthey’ Had a Connection to SRK! Filmmaker Mani Ratnam revealed that he initially considered casting Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in his 2000 hit “Alai Payuthey” but abandoned the idea due to difficulties with the film’s climax. The Tamil romantic musical starred R. Madhavan and Shalini, and it was later remade in Hindi as “Saathiya” with Rani Mukerji and Vivek Oberoi. The story follows a young couple who elope and marry, only to face challenges in their relationship. Let’s take a look at the reasons for Mani Ratnam’s dream cast decisions.
In a recent interview, Mani Ratnam said, “What I had planned to do with Shah Rukh was ‘Alai Payuthey’. I wanted to do it with Shah Rukh and Kajol and I told him the story and he agreed. But I had not cracked the last element of the story. If you’ve seen ‘Alai Payuthey’ it is built around one day and we keep going back to that one day, and when the accident happens and the wife is missing, and he is searching through it. So, that element I didn’t have it then. So, we shifted to ‘Dil Se’,” Ratnam said at the open forum of G5A Retrospective.”
In the same interview, he went on to reveal that “Once I was finishing ‘Dil Se’, I was able to solve this problem , and I was still interested in doing it. You are never sure you got it correct.. . You are still trying. Even when you’ve written fully, when you shoot, you are looking for something more because it’s still getting constructed. You need to elevate it… Actors have to come and make it alive, if they don’t do so, you can shout at them.”
Mani Ratnam’s next project with Kamal Hassan titled Thug Life is all set to hit the theatres on 5th June 2025. The film produced by Mani Ratnam, Kamal Haasan, Udhayanidhi Stalin, R Mahendran, and Siva Ananth is expected to be a perfect action drama for Kamal Hassan.
