Ganesh Chaturthi is a time of celebration, and food plays a significant role in the festivities. Here are 10 regional dishes people commonly prepare during this auspicious occasion. These dishes showcase India’s diverse culinary traditions.

Regional Dishes:

This is a sweet flatbread stuffed with “puran,” a mixture of chana dal, jaggery, and spices like cardamom and nutmeg. It is often served with a dollop of ghee for added flavor.

3. Patoli (Goa and Konkan)

Cooks make this sweet dish from rice flour. They steam it in turmeric leaves, which give it a unique aroma. The filling has coconut and jaggery. This makes it a delicious treat.

4. Undrallu Payasam (Andhra Pradesh and Telangana)

A creamy, sweet porridge made from rice flour balls cooked in milk, jaggery, and cardamom. The tiny rice balls add a chewy texture to the payasam.

5. Kozhukattai (Tamil Nadu and Kerala)

These steamed rice flour dumplings are filled with a sweet coconut-jaggery mixture. They come in both sweet and savory versions, with the sweet ones known as “vella kozhukattai.”

6. Sundal (Tamil Nadu)

A savory snack made from stir-fried legumes like chickpeas or peanuts. The dish is seasoned with mustard seeds, urad dal, curry leaves, and fresh grated coconut.

7. Motichoor Laddu (Northern India and Maharashtra)

Cooks deep-fry small pearls of gram flour. They soak them in sugar syrup and shape them into laddus. These laddus melt in the mouth and are a delicacy during Ganesh Chaturthi.

8. Churma Laddu (Gujarat and Rajasthan)

Cooks make these ladoos by crushing fried whole wheat flour dumplings. They mix the crumbs with ghee, jaggery, and cardamom. People usually serve them with daal baati.

9. Karanji or Gujiya (Maharashtra and North India)

A deep-fried pastry stuffed with a sweet filling of grated coconut, dried fruits, semolina, and khoya. These crescent-shaped treats are golden brown and delicious.

A sweet and fragrant coconut rice dish made with grated coconut, jaggery, and spices like cardamom and cloves. The combination of coconut and jaggery gives it an auspicious flavor.

These dishes not only celebrate the flavors of the season but also hold deep cultural significance, making them an integral part of the festival.
