Air India Crash Probe: What’s the Status?

Air India Crash Probe: What’s the Status?

No Preliminary Findings Yet on Crash: Growing Concerns

Two weeks have passed since Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crash in Ahmedabad, killing 270 people. As of now, no preliminary findings have been released, raising concerns among aviation experts. Former IAF fighter pilot Ajay Ahlawat has expressed his worry, emphasizing that if a Boeing 787 system failed, it’s crucial to fix the issue immediately.

He stated, “Urgent fixes are needed if the aircraft or any of its systems failed.” The absence of initial findings has raised alarms about the investigation’s pace. This delay has brought attention to the need for quick action to understand the cause and prevent future incidents.

Black Box Under Investigation

The black box from Air India Flight AI171 was recovered on June 13. It holds both the Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR) and the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR). Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu confirmed that the black box is still in India, under review by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB).

There had been speculation about sending the box to the United States for analysis, but Naidu firmly rejected this, stating that the investigation will remain domestic. Currently, the AAIB is analyzing the final 32 seconds of the flight to understand what went wrong. The data will provide insights into potential system malfunctions, and the cockpit communications will help clarify the crew’s actions.

Legal Push for Boeing Fleet Audit

Following the crash, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed in the Supreme Court, urging the grounding of all Boeing aircraft operated by Air India. Advocate Ajay Bansal, who filed the petition, pointed to other recent technical failures on Boeing aircraft and called for a comprehensive safety audit.

Despite these legal pressures, the investigation continues. International safety bodies like the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) are assisting the AAIB in the probe. Their expertise is essential to uncovering the cause of the crash.

Path Ahead: Urgent Need for Answers

Authorities have assured the public that safety and transparency will guide the investigation. However, the timeline for concluding the probe is still unclear. As one of the deadliest aviation tragedies in recent years, the crash of AI171 calls for a thorough investigation.

The investigation is ongoing, with legal pressures mounting. Both the public and aviation experts await answers to prevent future disasters and improve aviation safety.
