Andhra Pradesh Stampede: Tragedy at Venkateswara Swamy Temple During Ekadashi

Andhra Pradesh Stampede: What is usually a celebrated prayer day in the Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple became an unspeakable tragedy in Kasibugga, Srikakulam. A congregation of thousands of devotees caused a near stampede during Ekadashi celebrations that resulted in nine dead and many injured. The temple, usually thronged by devotees on any auspicious occasion, thus turned chaotic and sorrowful as panic gripped the crowd.

What Exactly Happened?

According to some eyewitnesses, the temple area was overcrowded with thousands of people from the early morning for darshan purposes. There was, however, an escalation in the influx of devotees from the morning towards evening and, in the absence of proper crowd management, near one of the major entry points, a state of discord arose. Within moments, an unreasonably dense crowd was pushing and shoving forward, leaving several amongst the devotees to fall and get trampled and crushed by others.

As local police and temple volunteers rushed toward the venue to disperse the crowd and uplift the injured, the majority of the victims were rushed to local hospitals in Srikakulam and Palasa.

First-Efforts and Administrative Actions

Rescue and relief operations were commenced by the authorities almost immediately. Senior district officials and ministers entered the scene, closely monitoring the situation and providing assistance. The Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, expressed his grief, calling the occurrence “heart-breaking loss for the state.” He has commanded that a profound investigation be carried out to analyze why security failed and to hold those responsible accountable.

Temporary medical camps were set up close to the temple for first aid while extra police were called in for crowd control to avoid a repeat of the incident.
