AP Disability Pension Holders:
The Andhra Pradesh government has begun reviewing disability and health category pensions under the NTR Bharosa Pension Scheme. This move comes after complaints that several irregularities took place in pension distribution during the previous government. The new coalition government has started field-level verification to identify fake or ineligible beneficiaries.
Medical teams have been appointed to verify the level of disability of the beneficiaries. Those with less than 40% disability are considered ineligible for disability pensions. Notices were already issued to such individuals in August, informing them about the suspension of their pensions. However, the government has now provided another chance for re-evaluation through medical tests.
Applicants who received notices can attend these tests and present their medical certificates for review. The welfare secretaries from village and ward secretariats, along with DRDA staff, have been assigned to inform the applicants about their test dates and locations. The verification includes checking documents and carefully examining the percentage of disability. The details will then be sent to the Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP) and the state government for final approval.
If the medical examination confirms that a person has less than 40% disability, their pension will be cancelled. However, those who are above 60 years old but are found ineligible for disability pensions will be shifted to the old-age pension category.
The medical tests are being conducted three days a week — Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday — at government hospitals. Each centre is testing around 100 to 130 applicants daily. To ensure transparency, the government has introduced a “jumbling system,” which assigns different hospitals for the re-evaluation process.
Officials estimate that the entire reassessment process will take nearly three months to complete. The main goal of this initiative is to ensure that pensions reach only the genuinely eligible individuals, preventing misuse of public welfare funds. Beneficiaries are advised to attend the scheduled medical tests; otherwise, their pensions will be stopped.
