Bairabi–Sairang Rail Line in Mizoram: All You Need to Know

Bairabi–Sairang Rail Line: According to an official statement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed to open the new Bairabi-Sairang railway line and Sairang railway station in Aizawl district “as soon as possible” during a meeting with Mizoram Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma in New Delhi, PTI reported.

“Chief Minister Shri @Lal_Duhoma met Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi in New Delhi today and discussed key development issues of Mizoram,” the CMO’s official X account said about CM Lalduhoma’s meeting with the prime minister.

Mizoram’s Bairabi-Sairang Line:

Indian Railways first conceived the Bairabi–Sairang railway line in September 1999. After tackling major alignment challenges, short working seasons, and frequent landslides, the project has finally placed Mizoram’s capital, Aizawl, on the country’s railway map. Officials confirmed that the vision Railways had in 1999 became a reality when the Commissioner of Railway Safety commissioned the line in June this year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to officially inaugurate the 51.38-kilometre railway route soon.

According to reports, engineers in 1999 decided to conduct a reconnaissance survey after determining that a preliminary survey was not feasible due to dense forests, low visibility, and difficult terrain. This initial survey involved a rough assessment of the route. Under the Preliminary Engineering-cum-Traffic (PET) Survey, officials attempted a more detailed examination. However, since a PET survey proved impractical, senior railway officials requested a shift to a Reconnaissance Engineering-cum-Traffic (RET) study. The Railway Board approved this change on July 15, 2003.

He said, “The Northeast Frontier Railways completed the RET survey for the Bairabi–Sairang rail link in March 2006.” In 2008, authorities assigned RITES the task of conducting a pre-construction survey and a geotechnical investigation for a new broad-gauge railway line from Bairabi to Sairang. RITES submitted its final report in August 2011.

Recognizing the project’s importance in connecting Mizoram with the rest of the country, the UPA government declared it a “National Project” in 2008–09. On November 29, 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone. By 2014–15, the Northeast Frontier Railways had completed the land acquisition process and began full-scale construction in 2015–16.
