Bathukamma Kunta Revival:
Bathukamma Kunta, located in the Amberpet area of Hyderabad, is undergoing a major transformation thanks to the Hyderabad Disaster Response & Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA). Once a thriving water body, the lake had suffered from years of encroachment and neglect, with much of its area gradually disappearing. However, a recent court ruling and the efforts of HYDRAA have brought hope for its revival.
Photographs taken in February 2025, before the launch of HYDRAA’s lake rejuvenation project, show the lake in a deteriorated state. Years of illegal encroachments buried the lake and drained its once-vibrant waters, reducing it to a shadow of its former self. The image captured in February highlights the extent of the degradation—muddy waters surrounded by concrete structures and waste.
In sharp contrast, recent aerial views captured on July 7, 2025, highlight the remarkable progress achieved in just a few months. HYDRAA’s restoration efforts, which began earlier this year, have focused on clearing encroachments, desilting, and reviving the natural ecosystem.
Excavation work uncovered water just four feet below the surface, signaling the potential to restore the lake’s natural vitality.
The Hyderabad High Court strengthened these efforts by ruling that private entities could not claim the land surrounding Bathukamma Kunta. This ruling ensured that HYDRAA’s work could continue unhindered. Senior Congress leader V. Hanumantha Rao’s intervention by providing crucial documents further strengthened the cause.
HYDRAA’s efforts have already begun to reshape Bathukamma Kunta into a vital ecological space for the city. With the ongoing restoration, authorities plan to develop the lake into a public park that will serve as both a recreational and environmental asset for Hyderabad.
Thanks to these ongoing efforts, the once-degraded Bathukamma Kunta is now on its way to regaining its lost glory. The lake’s rejuvenation not only highlights the importance of protecting natural resources but also showcases the power of collective action in preserving Hyderabad’s heritage for future generations.
