A UK citizen of Indian origin has been awarded ₹2 lakh in compensation after a wrongful detention at Mumbai airport caused him to miss his flight to London. The Karnataka Human Rights Commission (KHRC) ruled in favor of Krishna Prasad, who was stopped on February 19, 2019, at the immigration counter despite having a stay order from the Karnataka High Court.
Krishna Prasad was preparing to board a morning flight to London when immigration officials detained him based on a lookout circular issued by the Bengaluru police. The notice stemmed from a 2016 case involving charges of cruelty and criminal intimidation. However, Prasad had already obtained a court stay on the matter back in 2018. He showed this order to officials at the airport, but it was ignored. At 12:04 p.m. the same day, Halasuru Gate Women’s Police Station emailed immigration authorities, requesting his detention. Prasad remained in custody until the next evening.
Two police personnel from Bengaluru flew to Mumbai. According to Prasad, they verbally abused him, took his statement, and forced his sister to book a ticket for his travel to Bengaluru. “I showed them the stay order, but they didn’t care. I was mistreated and taken to meet an inspector,” he later told the rights panel. He was eventually released during the journey.

Prasad filed a complaint with the Karnataka Human Rights Commission. The panel launched an investigation into the incident. It found that the Bengaluru police had acted improperly by detaining him despite a valid court stay. The commission ordered the officer involved to pay ₹2 lakh in compensation for the wrongful detention. It also noted that immigration and police authorities failed to verify legal documents before taking action. The order was issued to prevent similar incidents in the future.
