Bengaluru Transport Strike:
On August 5, 2025, employees of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporations (KSRTC) began an indefinite strike, demanding better working conditions and improved pay. As a result, the state government has issued an advisory to help reduce disruptions to public life, particularly in Bengaluru.
To alleviate traffic congestion and minimize inconvenience, the government has urged private IT companies, especially those based in Bengaluru, to allow their employees to work from home during the strike. The Department of Information Technology communicated this request to ease pressure on public transport services and roads, which will likely face heavy impact.
The Joint Action Committee of Transport Unions organized the strike to protest two unresolved demands. They demand the payment of ₹1,785 crore in pending salary arrears for 38 months. They also seek a 25% pay increase effective from January 2024.Despite an offer from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to pay ₹718 crore for only 14 months of arrears, the unions rejected the proposal, maintaining that a 25% hike is necessary for the welfare of employees until 2027.
Transport services across Karnataka, including in Bengaluru, are likely to face disruptions as the strike continues. The state government has expressed concerns over the financial burden, noting that the transport corporations already have a debt of ₹4,000 crore. While a 15% salary hike was implemented in March 2023, the unions remain dissatisfied.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have called for public cooperation to manage the impact of the strike.
