This arc bears striking similarities to the 1975 Bollywood classic Deewaar, where Amitabh Bachchan’s character follows a nearly identical rise. Fans and film analysts note the emotional weight, anti-hero tone, and social undertones that mirror Deewaar’s iconic plot.

Lokesh Kanagaraj Says It’s Not a Remake

Director Lokesh Kanagaraj has addressed the speculation. He clarified that Coolie is not a remake or reboot of Deewaar. Instead, he explained that the film includes nostalgic callbacks to Rajinikanth’s older works particularly Uzhaipaali, Thalapathi, and Thee, which themselves carried shades of similar themes.

Lokesh described these references as intentional Easter eggs and said they were crafted to honor Rajinikanth’s legacy, not to mimic other films.
