Break Railway Gate Rules? Fines & Jail Await in Telugu States

Railway Gate Rules: Countless accidents happen every year in our country at railway crossings. Most of these tragedies occur because motorists ignore closed gates and try to rush through. To tackle this serious problem, the Railway Department is stepping up with tougher measures.

What does the law say?

As per the Railway Act 1989, anyone crossing a closed railway gate can already be fined up to ₹5,000. But now, authorities are going even further. Under the new rules, violators can be booked and even arrested. So it won’t just end with a fine, there’s also a real chance of jail time.

What are the new guidelines?

  • To improve safety, the Railways has introduced strict measures. These include: Installing CCTV cameras at major level crossings
  • Sending e-challans based on video evidence
  • Court summons for repeat offenders
  • Arrest if needed
  • Using smart sensors and control systems at gates

Now, if someone crosses when the gate is closed without a very strong reason, it will be treated as a crime.

What is the purpose of this new railway gate rules?

Every day Indian Railways manages about 13,000 trains and a large number of them travel at speeds greater than 100 km/h. A careless action at any given intersection could be lethal. There were more than 570 railway gate accidents in India this year alone. This is exactly the reason the government is enforcing these policies to safeguard the public.

How is the public reacting?

The policies are already igniting major conversations on multiple platforms. As to be expected, there are supporters strongly rallying for enforcements, stating that only severe consequences will serve as a lesson and make others cautious. A handful of individuals even go as far as saying that fines aren’t enough, those who endanger the lives of many should be sentenced to prison.
