China Role in the Indus Water Dispute:

Tensions have been rising between India and Pakistan over the Indus Water Treaty (IWT), and now, China has entered the fray, complicating the situation further. India recently decided to pause its participation in the 1960 treaty, which governs the distribution of water from the Indus River system. This move followed a terrorist attack that resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians in Indian-administered Kashmir, prompting India to re-evaluate its relationship with Pakistan over water resources.

China Role in the Indus Water Dispute:

The Indus Water Treaty was designed to allocate water from the Indus River to Pakistan for agriculture, benefiting around 80% of Pakistan’s farmlands. However, tensions have escalated as both countries struggle over the management of this vital resource. Amid this conflict, Pakistan has turned to China for support, seeking diplomatic and strategic backing.

China, which shares a border with both India and Pakistan, has long had ambitions to increase its influence in South Asia. This involvement in the Indus issue raises concerns in India, as the country fears China could potentially disrupt the flow of water from rivers originating in Tibet, which feed into the Indus system. China’s interest in the dispute is more than just a diplomatic maneuver—it also sees itself as a key player in the region, one that could tilt the balance of power in favor of Pakistan.

In response to India’s suspension of the treaty, China has moved quickly to accelerate the construction of the Mohmand Hydro Project on one of the tributaries of the Indus in Pakistan. This dam will not only provide Pakistan with much-needed water but also generate electricity for the country, further strengthening its ties with Islamabad.

This development has raised alarm bells in New Delhi, as China’s involvement could escalate regional tensions. Beijing’s growing influence in the Indus Water dispute threatens to destabilize an already fragile situation. India’s position is now more precarious, as the country must balance its water needs with growing geopolitical challenges posed by China’s expanding role in the region.
