Cyclone Montha Impact: Cyclone Montha, which began in the Bay of Bengal, now is a strong cyclone, bringing heavy rainfall and winds to Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and the nearby coastal states. As the cyclone intensifies, precautionary measures are being taken in the interest of passenger safety. Large-scale cancellations and diversions of Indian Railways and various airlines have been announced to avoid mishaps.
As a precautionary measure, Indian Railways has taken a very bold decision with respect to public safety by cancelling over 150 train services. Initially, the East Coast Railway cancelled 43 trains, after which South Central Railway suspended more than 75 routes. Most of these cancellations are for the routes running through Visakhapatnam and along the coastal stretch from October 28 to October 30.
The suspended services include superfast express trains, MEMU, and passenger trains connecting major city destinations like Vijayawada, Rajahmundry, Guntur, Kakinada, Tenali, Narsapur, Ongole, Bhimavaram, and Macharla. Rail authorities have assured the passengers that automatic full refunds will be made to the passengers on account of these cancelled trains, with alerts sent via SMS to ticket holders.
Air travel too has been impacted. A horrible situation has come upon the airline business, especially at Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, and Rajahmundry airports. On Monday night, Air India Express’s Vijayawada to Visakhapatnam flight was cancelled while almost 36 out of 46 flights were suspended from Vijayawada.
Some active routes, including Vijayawada to Sharjah, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Chennai, have been temporarily suspended. Vizag Airport has also restrained multiple flights heading to Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru owing to bad weather.
