Mumbai Local Trains: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis delivered good news to Mumbai commuters. He announced that the central government had approved the replacement of all suburban train coaches with air-conditioned ones equipped with automatic doors. He clarified that Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw personally informed him about the approval. Indian Railways will soon issue an official announcement regarding the decision.
Passengers Dead in Crowded Trains:
Fadnavis stated that authorities took this crucial decision after five passengers died on June 9 when they fell from two overcrowded trains near Mumbra station. He said he immediately urged the central government to implement automatic doors in suburban coaches to prevent such tragedies. He confirmed that passengers would now enjoy AC travel without any increase in fares.
“We requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to introduce metro-style coaches for suburban trains while keeping fares unchanged,” he said. He added that the Railway Minister, during his recent visit to Mumbai, assured him that the government would make a positive announcement soon. The new AC coaches will include automatic doors, he revealed.

AC Travel Without Fare Hike:
Fadnavis reiterated that the government would offer AC travel facilities without raising fares. He acknowledged the challenges Mumbaikars face when traveling in overcrowded local trains. He noted that delays have become a growing concern in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, with frequent train accidents claiming several lives.
Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik recently proposed the formation of a special task force to address overcrowding in private companies. During a legislative discussion, he revealed that local train travel claimed 7,565 lives and injured 7,293 people over the past three years.
Lack of Doors in Local Trains:
Fadnavis identified doorless coaches as the main reason for the rising number of railway accidents. “Suburban railway accidents occur due to coaches without doors. Overcrowding forces people to travel in hazardous conditions,” he said. “Mumbai has two types of passengers: those who travel safely on the metro and those who risk their lives on local trains. That system is about to change. Everyone will soon have the opportunity to travel safely.”
