In a surprising turn of events unveiled recently, director Dominic Arun revealed that actor and director Basil Joseph was initially in the running for the title role in Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, which was eventually played by Naslen K. Gafoor.

The movie, which was acclaimed for its original storytelling and gripping performances, particularly by Naslen, would have been a very different affair if Basil had accepted the role. Dominic Arun reveals that Basil was approached early in the casting process, and the negotiations went fairly well. But because of his other commitments and scheduling issues, Basil declined the offer.

Basil regrets?

Now, since the movie is receiving popularity and Naslen’s acting is being adored by everyone, Basil Joseph is said to regret giving away the role. Speaking recently, the director said that Basil himself confessed having felt that he “missed out on something special.”

Dominic Arun mentioned Basil was really enthusiastic about the script back then but things didn’t go as planned. “Sometimes, things don’t work out as they should. But Basil was one of our first options for the role of Chandra,” explained the director.

It is not new in the movie world for characters to pass on from one actor to another, and this news has only created even more fascination among fans; speculating what the movie would have been like with Basil leading. With Basil’s already established capabilities both as an actor and a director, his take on the problematic character of Chandra would have definitely brought an added flavor.

Granted, Naslen’s performance infused newness and unbridled energy into the screen, which has augmented the film’s cult following. While Basil might sit back and regret with a dash of what if, the fans are left now thinking of a parallel Lokah, one spearheaded by Basil Joseph.
