Rs 500 Notes:
A rumor recently went viral on social media claiming that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will stop dispensing Rs 500 notes from ATMs starting September 30, 2025. According to this message, only Rs 200 and Rs 100 notes will be available at ATMs in the future. This sparked panic among the public, leading to widespread discussions. However, the government quickly debunked the misinformation.
The Press Information Bureau (PIB), the official government agency for information dissemination, clarified the matter by calling the rumor “fake.” It assured the public that the RBI had not issued any such directive to banks regarding the discontinuation of this notes from ATMs. The PIB urged people to ignore such false messages and rely on official sources for accurate information.
While the rumor about Rs 500 notes is untrue, there has been an official update from the RBI that is related to ATM withdrawals. The RBI has issued new guidelines about the denominations that should be dispensed through ATMs. According to the latest notification, by September 30, 2025, 75% of the notes dispensed from ATMs must be in Rs 100 and Rs 200 denominations. This proportion will increase to 90% by March 31, 2026.
The decision is a part of the RBI’s strategy to address the shortage of smaller currency notes, especially those of Rs 100. This change aims to make it easier for people to get smaller denominations for everyday transactions. It will also help people face fewer difficulties when withdrawing cash from ATMs, as they can now access more Rs 100 and Rs 200 notes.
The government decided to increase the percentage of Rs 100 and Rs 200 notes in circulation in response to the public’s demand for smaller currency notes. In recent times, people have faced challenges when withdrawing smaller amounts from ATMs because many ATMs carry mostly larger denominations like Rs 500 and Rs 2000 notes.By ensuring that more Rs 100 and Rs 200 notes are available, the RBI hopes to make cash withdrawals more convenient for the common person.
Despite the changes in ATM dispensing rules, there is no indication that this note will be discontinued or phased out. The rumor suggesting the withdrawal of Rs 500 notes is entirely false. As per the current guidelines, Rs 500 notes will remain valid, and people can continue to use them for transactions without any concern. The RBI has confirmed that there is no plan to withdraw these notes from circulation, either through ATMs or in general.
So the news that this notes will be withdrawn from ATMs starting September 2025 is not true. The RBI has clarified that there is no such directive. The authorities recently changed ATM dispensing rules to improve access to smaller denominations and make it easier for people to withdraw the notes they need. Therefore, there is no reason to panic or worry about the availability of Rs 500 notes. As always, it’s important to verify such information from official sources to avoid falling for fake news.
