Gold Purity Check:
Gold has always been one of the most trusted forms of investment in India, especially during festivals like Dhanteras and Diwali. However, with rising prices and increasing demand, the chances of impurity or adulteration have also gone up. To address this, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made hallmarking mandatory to ensure the purity of gold.
Gold hallmarking is a certification that confirms the purity of gold jewellery. The BIS Hallmark is issued after testing the proportion of precious metal content. It acts as a guarantee for buyers, assuring them that their jewellery meets the required purity standards.
The government introduced mandatory hallmarking in four phases across India — starting from June 2021 and expanding up to November 2024. Currently, over 360 districts are covered under this scheme, and all gold jewellery sold in these areas must be hallmarked.
Every piece of hallmarked jewellery now comes with a six-digit Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number. Consumers can use the BIS Care App to verify the authenticity of their gold. By entering the HUID on the app, one can check details such as the jeweller’s registration and purity level before making a purchase.
If you already own jewellery without a hallmark, you can take it to a BIS-recognised Assaying and Hallmarking Centre (AHC) for testing. The centres charge ₹45 per item, with a minimum fee of ₹200 per lot. They provide a detailed report confirming the purity level and any doubts regarding hollow or mixed-metal jewellery.
If your hallmarked jewellery is found to be of lesser purity, you are entitled to compensation worth twice the difference in purity value, along with testing charges.
This initiative by BIS ensures transparency and builds trust among consumers, helping them make safe and informed gold purchases.
