Cardiologist Dr. Dinesh Raj, a senior consultant at HCG Hospitals in Rajkot warns that not all heart attacks begin with the classic crushing chest pain that most people associate with the condition. In fact early heart attack symptoms can be much more subtle especially among younger adults and women.

While chest pain is commonly linked to heart attacks, it’s important to recognize that this pain can manifest in various forms. Dr. Dinesh explains that it could range from a dull ache, a sharp stabbing pain, or a burning sensation. It may even radiate to other parts of the body, such as the shoulders, neck, or back. Other subtle symptoms include shortness of breath, unexplained fatigue, light-headedness, and cold sweats.


A common misconception is that all chest pain is a sign of a heart attack. Dr. Dinesh cautions that chest discomfort can also stem from non-cardiac issues like gastrointestinal problems, muscular strain, or respiratory issues. However, due to the potentially severe consequences, it is always better to rule out heart-related causes first.

Why Early Detection is Critical

Heart disease is on the rise among younger populations in India, largely due to lifestyle choices such as poor diet, lack of exercise, and high-stress levels. According to Dr. Dinesh, the key to minimizing damage and improving recovery outcomes is early detection. The sooner a heart attack is diagnosed and treated, the greater the chance of preventing long term damage to the heart muscle.

Unfortunately, many individuals ignore or misinterpret their symptoms. They may chalk it up to acidity, fatigue, or stress and delay seeking medical attention. This hesitation can be fatal as the first few hours after a heart attack are critical in preventing further damage to the heart. Dr. Dinesh emphasizes the importance of prompt medical intervention during these “golden hours.”

The Causes of Heart Attacks

A heart attack, or myocardial infarction, occurs when a blood clot blocks the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle. The most common culprits are blocked coronary arteries, which can occur due to a buildup of fatty deposits or cholesterol. Lifestyle risk factors such as smoking, obesity and sedentary habits significantly contribute to this process.

In urban India, cases of premature coronary artery disease are becoming increasingly common, with many individuals unaware of their risk due to underlying conditions like high cholesterol or hypertension.

Prevention and Lifestyle Changes

Dr. Dinesh stresses that while some risk factors like age and genetics cannot be changed, many lifestyle factors can be modified to reduce the risk of heart disease. He recommends regular health check ups by maintaining healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels, eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly and managing stress. Quitting smoking is also crucial for heart health.

Small, consistent changes in daily routines can go a long way in preventing future cardiac events. Recognizing early signs of a heart attack and acting swiftly can save lives.

While chest pain is a commonly known symptom of a heart attack it’s not always the most obvious. Subtle symptoms, especially in younger individuals, should not be dismissed. Dr. Dinesh’s advice is clear: if you experience discomfort or unusual fatigue, don’t wait for the symptoms to go away on their own. Seek medical advice immediately. In cases of heart disease, time truly is of the essence; quick intervention can make a world of difference in recovery.
