How Cyclones Like ‘Montha’ Get Their Names?


Cyclone Montha: Ever wondered how every cyclone and Tsunami gets its name right after the reports? You might wonder who this person is who keeps names for all the cyclones and tsunamis. For all the natural calamities, there was a bunch of countries from Asia and neighbouring countries of the Indian Ocean that have come together and gave some of the names for the cyclones and Tsunamis within the region.

In this bunch of countries, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan, and the Maldives are in the list. This list was formed in the year 2000, and still the list is continuing.


These names are overseen by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). The list of names was offered by every nation in its own proposals. Following the submission, these names were then reviewed and finalized by the Panel on Tropical Cyclones (PTC).

In the year 2018 WMO/ESCAP group allowed additional countries like Iran, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. Following this, IMD announced a new catalogue in April 2020, which featured around 169 names for cyclones. Every country has proposed 13 names for updating the list.

What is the meaning of ‘Montha‘ & which country gave it?

The name ‘Montha’, which means beautiful or fragrant flower, was given by Thailand.

As per WMO’s official website, “The selection of names is based on their familiarity to the people in each region, aiming to aid in the understanding and remembrance of cyclones. The naming procedures can vary, with some regions using alphabetical order and others using the alphabetical order of country names. It is important to note that tropical cyclones are not named after individuals.”

How are Cyclone Names chosen?

As per the WMO reports, to choose a new name from the list, some criteria are taken before choosing. The name should be concise and straightforward, making it simple to mention in conversation. Pronunciation must be uncomplicated, and the meaning should be suitable across various languages. The name has to be distinctive, and there should not be a repetition of names already assigned elsewhere.
